Although 仓颉Cangjie is a legendary figure and this is a simplified, non-technical explanation, the Six Principles of Chinese characters—known as 六书 (liùshū)—essentially summarize how Chinese characters are formed.
They include ①pictographs (象形) , ②indicatives (指事) , ③compound ideographs (会意) , and ④phono-semantic compounds (形声) , which are the most common type, making up around 80–90% of all characters. There are also ⑤borrowed characters (假借), where a character is used for another word with a similar sound, and ⑥mutually explanatory characters (转注), where two characters share related meanings or forms.
