Perseverance was commissioned by K.F. Moed & Volharding from Heist-op-den-Berg as part of ‘Fanfarissimo’, a collaboration of nine leading fanfare orchestras. By joining forces, they want to give the repertoire for fanfare bands a quality boost.
It describes the journey of the Perseverance Mars Rover that NASA's Mars mission in 2020. The work begins with ‘Space’. A view from Earth of a beautiful open starry sky that has always made mankind wonder what is out there! Nasa announced in 2012 that, following the success of the Curiosity Rover, they plan to launch a Sample return campaign of 4 separate missions to Mars in collaboration with the European Space Agency, aiming to store, retrieve, launch and safely return samples from the Martian surface to Earth.
The work continues with ‘Atlas V541’. The rocket used to launch the Perseverance Mars Rover to Mars. It is an expandable launch system, meaning that the rocket can only be launched once after which its components will be destroyed on re-entry into our atmosphere. The trip to Mars is a dangerous operation where a lot can go wrong. The music is fast and exciting, thematic motifs are constantly flying around and the tension is constantly being ratcheted up, the closer the landing approaches. Then the music moves abruptly into the ‘Landing’ section. All the work of the past few decades culminates in this. The Rover must now successfully land on the surface of Mars and this is a very delicate operation! On 18 February 2021, 20:55 UTC comes confirmation that Perseverance has successfully landed!
The next part ‘The Red Planet’ is a slow part that depicts the unexplored beauty of the surface of Mars. Soon after landing, Perseverance transmitted the first ‘selfie’ of itself driving on the surface of Mars.
After this, the music switches to ‘Sample Return Mission’. The idea is that the samples Perseverance has collected over the past few years will reach Earth again via a launch from Mars. The data we could collect here could be invaluable. The music builds to a grand finale with a clear reference to Stravinsky's Firebird, which is a reference to the initial launch of the Atlas V541 Rocket.
