Set in 1912, An Inspector Calls revolves around the wealthy Birling family, who are celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft. Their celebration is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of a mysterious police inspector, Inspector Goole. The inspector is investigating the suicide of a young working-class woman named Eva Smith.

As the questioning unfolds, Inspector Goole reveals that each member of the Birling family, as well as Gerald, is somehow implicated in the tragic events that led to Eva's death. Arthur Birling, a wealthy industrialist, had once fired Eva from his factory for demanding fair wages. Sheila, in a fit of jealousy, had used her influence to have Eva dismissed from a shop. Gerald admits to having had an affair with Eva, while she was struggling to make ends meet. Eric, the younger son, had also been involved with her, and his irresponsible behaviour had left her pregnant.

Through this interrogation, the inspector exposes the selfishness and lack of responsibility of the Birlings, challenging their moral values and highlighting the consequences of their actions on others. The family members, initially dismissive and indifferent, are forced to confront their role in Eva’s downfall.
