On the 17th June 1939 the last public execution by guillotine was carried out in France. Eugen Weidmann was a notorious serial killer from Germany and he was executed on the guillotine in front of a crowd, but the behaviour of those who witnessed the execution was shocking. Many took photographs of the proceedings and this led to a change in France, as the guillotining then took place behind the closed doors of prisons. It had been an execution method used even to take the heads off the King and Queen, but Eugen Weidmann's execution was historic for the wrong reasons.
