While eczema can affect anyone, it is more common in Black, Hispanic and low-income communities. African American children are almost twice as likely to develop eczema than white children.

Eczema often begins in childhood. Children with a family history of atopic dermatitis or other allergic diseases (asthma, hay fever) are more likely to have the condition. Many people don’t know that eczema may be an allergic condition. Living around certain environmental allergens can increase your risk of developing eczema. Housing situations, language barriers, added stress and transportation issues can make it more difficult to manage eczema and access care.
People with eczema depend on their primary care doctors and specialists such as allergists to accurately diagnose and treat their condition. Eczema looks different in skin of color and it is very important that doctors are able to identify and treat it.
Each patient should be able to fully participate in care for their eczema and in terms they understand. When patients are educated and feel they are a partner in their care, we see more positive health outcomes.
