Kenyan-led security forces attack headquarters of powerful gang leader ‘Barbecue’

Описание: Security forces launched an assault on the headquarters of a powerful Haitian gang leader on Sunday, November 24. Jimmy Chérizier, commonly known as "Barbecue", was reported to have fled a team from the Multinational Security Support Mission and Haitian National Police attacked his stronghold in the Baz Delmas neighbourhood of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Chérizier is widely reported as one of Haiti's most powerful figures, as the leader of the Revolutionary Forces of the G9 Family and Allies, a federation of 12 gangs that control most of the capital.

Sunday's operation appeared to be a show of strength by the MSSM amid reported doubts about its effectiveness. Along with this narrated footage, the group released a statement on the events.

"Recent developments in Haiti have left many Haitians questioning the role of MSS and its handling of the current security situation amid an apparent surge in gang activities.

"MSS remains unwavering in its mission to support the Haitian National Police (HNP) in combating gangs, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and creating a secure environment for upcoming general elections. To this end, MSS continues to conduct joint day and night patrols alongside targeted security operations aimed at apprehending key gang leaders.

"While some of these joint efforts may not be widely publicized, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, MSS and HNP launched major operations in Delmas. These operations are specifically targeting gang leaders responsible for terrorizing innocent civilians. MSS is resolute in its mission and will not relent until these perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice. Our commitment to dismantling gang networks and dislodging them from their strongholds remains firm.

"We call on all Haitians of goodwill, along with national and international partners, to lend their support, cooperation, and collaboration as we enter this critical and decisive phase of operations.

"Our ultimate goal is to see Haiti restored to its former glory."
