(…)II soffitto della navata centrale, attribuito a Michelangelo (1475-1564), a Daniele Ricciarelli da Volterra (1509-1566) ed a Pirro Ligorio, è stato realizzato dall'ebanista francese Flaminio Boulanger, che lo iniziò nel 1562, affiancato dai maestri di legname Vico di Raffaele di Lazzaro e Matteo Bartolini da Castello. Vico di Raffaele di Lazzaro, morto insieme con altri nove operai per il cedimento dell'incastellatura, fu sostituito dal maestro Ambrogio. Le decorazioni ed i simboli si debbono a Daniele Ricciarelli, coadiuvato da Lucio Luzi (+1576) e dal doratore Leonardo Cugni. Il riquadro centrale si concluse durante il pontificato di Pio IV (1559-1565), come attestato dallo stemma pontificale, così pure quello di san Pio V (1566-1572) testimonia i lavori compiuti durante il suo pontificato.

Ceiling
Pope Pius IV (1559-65) commissioned the extant flat coffered wooden nave ceiling of the basilica in 1562. The design is attributed to Pirro Ligorio, the structural carpenters were Vico di Raffaele di Lazzaro and Matteo Bartolini da Castello, the fine-detail woodcarvers were Daniele da Volterra and François "Flaminio" Boulanger, the painter was Luzio Luzi and the gilder was Leonardi Cugni. The work dragged on to 1567, which is why the heraldry of Pope Pius V features. Then in 1775 the ceiling was restored on the orders of Pope Pius VI, who had his own heraldry incorporated in it -there seems to be uncertainty as to how radical a restoration this was.
There are three papal coats-of-arms in the ceiling, occupying the three main coffers: Pope Pius IV (Medici, 1559-1565) in the centre, those of St. Pius V (1566-1572) at the far end and Pius VI (1775-1799) at the entrance. The side coffers feature the Instruments of the Passion in the centre, and Eucharistic symbols at each end. The gilding is fabulously rich, with backgrounds in red and blue with a little green
