Absztrakt: You may have heard the recent groundbreaking news about the first transplants of genetically engineered pig organs into human patients with end-stage organ disease. In this talk, David Heja will delve into the history of xenotransplantation—the transplantation of organs from animals to humans—shedding light on the challenges that have been overcome and those that remain. Having spent years at the forefront of developing genetically modified pig donors, David will share his firsthand insights into this rapidly evolving field and discuss the potential of xenotransplantation to revolutionize organ transplantation and help solve the global organ shortage crisis.

Bio: David Heja earned his PhD in biochemistry from Eötvös Loránd University, where he studied an inflammatory pathway critical to organ rejection. He then pursued research in transplantation immunology as a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical Universities in Vienna and later in New York. Following his academic work, he joined eGenesis, a biotech startup founded by Harvard geneticist Professor George Church, where he contributed to the development of genetically engineered pigs for transplantation. David is a lead author of the preclinical study that laid the groundwork for the first-ever pig-to-human kidney transplant. He has authored multiple publications and patents and is also a co-founder of a biotech startup.
