Intelligent strategy & enlightened self-interest by the US Army's 1st Cavalry division, 8th Engineer Battalion and the battalion commander Lt.Col Brian Dosa, securing funding for and coordinating multi-million dollar reconstruction projects in Baghdad in 2005.
This short video shows two of them - installing a sewage treatment plant for a Baghdad suburb, and renovating a neglected water treatment plant - where there was a potential (unintended) weapon of mass destruction; a large cylinder leaking chlorine gas.
The projects used Iraqi contractors and employed local people.
"The goal," said Col. Dosa, "was to work with the Iraqis not impose American solutions.
Our infrastructure projects created numerous job opportunities, lowered unemployment,
stimulated the economy, reduced support for the insurgency among the general populace and reduced the ability of anti-Iraqi forces to recruit adherents."
I write about this - and my other experiences during thirty visits to Iraq since 2003 - in my extensively illustrated online book War Crime.
