Madunagala Hot Spring
Maha Pelassa Hot Spring is also known as Madunagala Hot Spring
This is located six kilometers from the town of Suriyawewa in the Hambantota District. The number of hot springs currently identified in Sri Lanka is nine. The only hot spring located in the Southern Province is this hot spring in the Madunagala area of the Hambantota District.
According to the results of geophysical studies such as gravity, magnetic and potential studies conducted in the Maha Pelassa area, a 6km long north-south rift and a northeast-southwest rift are found here. Based on the high hydrogen concentration contained in this water, it can be assumed that the rift runs to a depth of more than 10km. The water on the surface of the Earth collects in these rifts and travels along them for about three kilometers. Due to the geothermal gradient, it can be considered that the water at that depth reaches a temperature of about 103 degrees Celsius and then comes back to the surface through cracks as a hot spring.
During this process, due to cooling and mixing with cold water, the temperature will drop to about 44 degrees Celsius. The water flow rate of the Maha Pelassa hot spring is about five hundred and forty-three milliliters per second.
Bathing in the water of many hot springs in the world is considered to have medicinal value. In addition, electricity is generated using the temperature of the water in these hot springs using steam. It seems that the possibility of using the water of the hot springs of Sri Lanka, including Maha Pelassa, for such purposes is a matter of further study.
