“The Physical Layer (PHY) in 5G NR (New Radio) is the foundation of wireless communication, responsible for modulation, coding, signal transmission, and reception between the User Equipment (UE) and the gNB (5G base station). It plays a critical role in achieving high-speed, low-latency, and reliable connectivity in 5G networks.
Key Features of the 5G NR Physical Layer:
1. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) – 5G uses CP-OFDM for downlink and DFT-s-OFDM for uplink, improving spectral efficiency and robustness.
2. Flexible Numerology – Unlike LTE, 5G supports multiple subcarrier spacing (15, 30, 60, 120, 240 kHz) for different use cases.
3. Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) – Uses multiple antennas to enhance data rates and coverage using beamforming techniques.
4. Beamforming and Beam Management – Ensures efficient transmission in high-frequency mmWave bands by directing signals toward users.
5. Dynamic TDD (Time Division Duplexing) – Allows flexible allocation of uplink and downlink resources.
6. Channel Coding (LDPC & Polar Codes) – LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) coding is used for data, while Polar coding is used for control channels, improving error correction.
7. Slot-Based Transmission – 5G divides the transmission into slots and mini-slots, allowing low-latency and dynamic scheduling.
8. Multiple Transmission Schemes – Supports Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) operation, ensuring smooth transition from 4G LTE to 5G.
The 5G Physical Layer is designed to provide higher data rates, reduced latency, and enhanced reliability, making it the backbone of modern wireless communication. In this video, we will break down the architecture, functionalities, and technologies of the 5G NR Physical Layer in a simple and easy-to-understand way.”
