"The stories built up by question and answer. 'Why is the engine sad, Daddy?' 'Because he's not been out for a long time.' 'What's his name?' 'Edward'--because that was the first name that came into my head," Awdry said in a 1995 interview with Church Times. (Los Angeles Times, 1997)

On May 12th, 1945, the first book of the beloved children's book series, perfect for small hands, 'The Railway Series', was published in Great Britain by Edmund Ward. It all started when Christopher Awdry was only two years old, when he caught some measles and had to be in a darkened bedroom of the family house in Kings Norton, Birmingham to rest.

As Wilbert tries to entertain his son to make him happy again, something caught his eye on a picture of five engines in a row, all were happy but one, and this is how it all began....

Thomas & Friends (formerly called Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a global phenomenal children's franchise with talking trains on a fictional island located between Barrow Hill and the Isle of Man. With over 400 episodes, 10 feature length specials and a movie, the television series enthralled families and children in over 300 territories and 40 languages around the world in several mediums such as DVDs, television, cinemas and lots more.

The Railway Series spanned a total number of 42 books from 1945 to 2011, with the first 26 written by Wilbert Awdry, while the remaining 16 were all written by his son, Christopher, who also wrote numerous of other Thomas stories in books and annuals outside the Railway Series.

Tuesday May 12th, 2015 marked the 70th Anniversary of the publication of 'The Three Railway Engines', with Thomas and his friends keep on making tracks to great destinations for generations to come.

The sizzle video also promotes the publication of the updated edition of Brian Sibley's 'The Thomas the Tank Engine Man' biography book, since the original edition had been out of print for years after its publication on October 1995. The biography book of Wilbert Awdry features the updated prologue, epilogue and few other updates in the book itself.
