Not being angry is hard. How do we do it? 

Our logical mind can tell us that we should let go of anger, that being angry isn’t healthy for us. Yet, our emotions make it so hard to stop being angry, especially when we feel like we’ve been a victim of a situation.

Instinctively, our anger is our way of protecting ourselves when something beyond our control has happened to us. If we don’t have anger, we might feel helpless and de vastated and that’s way worse. So even though logically we want to let go of anger, emotionally we’re choosing to hold on to anger.

It feels like we ‘lose’ even more if we let go of our anger. When we examine why we feel this way, we’ll find that the reason is often because if we’re not angry, it feels a lot like saying: “What you did to me don’t matter.”

And that may mean … “I don’t matter”.

Anger feels likes we’re saying: ”I am not insignificant, you cannot treat me like that!"

It is possible to take action to stand up for ourselves without anger, we have to first believe that no one can ‘make us’ insignificant. This is why for us to truly let go of anger in our lives, we have to work on our sense of self-worth.

If deep down inside, we have a fear that we're not good enough, then we will constantly need proof and validation that we are enough. This means that we'll subconsciously attach our self-worth to how people treat us.

When people treat us in a way that is the opposite of validating us, we can take it as a personal rejection, an indication of our worst fears coming true - I am a failure. I am not deserving. I am not good enough. I am not lovable.

We take it so personally when someone has hurt us because our fury is a defensive mechanism against our own fears.

How we react when we’ve been hurt is very tied to our sense of self-worth.

To practice letting go of anger, we practice accepting ourselves. It is only when we don’t attach our self-worth to people and things that we truly believe that everything that happens is not personal.

And when it’s not personal… there’s no reason to hold on to anger. And that’s when we can let go and free ourselves to be happy, always.
