This has turned into a fun little side project I can tinker with in the late hours when I can't be doing anything particularly more productive. Some time back dealing with dust and debris being sucked into the fan on my 20w Ray5 got the better of me and I made the first duct just to give myself something I could wrap a filter around...it worked great for that. Then FlixMySwitch Laser posted about his modified fan grill for keeping the noise down.
Confession: I've done so much damage to my hearing that I can't hardly hear the fan anyway without paying attention to it lol. I have to get right down close to it and in the end I had to ask my kids to listen to it and see if it was significantly quieter. I've been fiddling with it since.
This is the latest one I've got done. I'm calling it the Type B. I made it with NACA 2414 airfoils...but I gave them a curve so they're not really 2414's anymore. With the original grill I can hear a whine and a lot of moving air, with the Type A duct it's pretty heavily muted for me. With the Type B I can't hear any of the whine, but I got more white noise. I don't have an anemometer to test the air flow or a decibel meter to measure volume...but it looks way cooler.
Both files and printing instructions are available in the Odysee link below, and the video is for demonstrating sound. If anyone would like one but don't have a printer, I have either model for $4 on my eBay store and I'll send one that's printed true and post-processed. I recommend getting a printer, though, they're a great hobby to sit beside the laser!
