Born on February 10, 1805, in Kerala, India, he dedicated his life to religious and social work. He co-founded the first indigenous congregation for men, the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), and a similar congregation for women, the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC).Saint Chavara emphasized the importance of education, establishing schools and a printing press to make education accessible to all, including the underprivileged. His initiatives played a significant role in improving literacy rates in Kerala.
