The Lord Mayor's Chapel is the only surviving building of the former St Mark’s Hospital, founded in the 13th century and originally connected to St Augustine’s Abbey, which is now Bristol Cathedral. In 1722, it became the official place of worship for the Lord Mayor of Bristol and remains one of only two such chapels in the country.
The chapel is listed as a Grade I historic building and is considered one of the most significant medieval sites in the city. Inside, it preserves late Gothic architectural features, continental stained glass, and distinctive Spanish tiles in the side chapel. A particularly striking element is the large window created for William Beckford’s unrealised Neo-Gothic project — Fonthill Abbey.
Despite its historical importance, the chapel maintains a quiet and peaceful atmosphere in the very heart of Bristol.
