Located in the historic centre of Bursa over the Gökdere River, Irgandı Bridge is one of the world’s first covered bridges with shops built on top. Constructed in 1442 by the merchant Hacı Muslihiddin and designed by architect Timurtaş, the bridge features a single-arched structure and 18 shops where traders once conducted business during the Ottoman period.
Today, visitors can explore the shops, filled with traditional Turkish crafts such as handmade ceramics, wood carvings, mother-of-pearl inlay, and miniature art. Cafés on the bridge offer the perfect spot to enjoy Turkish tea while soaking in the historic atmosphere of Bursa.
Despite suffering damage from earthquakes, fires, and wars, including the 1855 Bursa earthquake and events during 1922, the bridge has been restored multiple times. Its most recent restoration in 2004 by Osmangazi Municipality faithfully preserved the original design.
Irgandı Bridge remains a key symbol of Bursa’s cultural heritage, Ottoman trading culture, and traditional craftsmanship, making it a must-visit attraction for both local and international tourists.
