"Belfast" is totally gonna be a best picture frontrunner... which means I'll have to somehow find something else to say about it.
Here are some other things I didn't have time to mention:
The kid acted good. I liked the kid.
THE DAD IS CHRISTIAN GREY!? FROM 50 SHADES OF GREY!?
If the original song in this movie is what I think it is, it was pretty catchy.
I know why the movie is black-and-white - oooh, movies are so cool, whoa - but I’m not 100% sure if it really benefits the vibe of the film.
There were moments too when the movie felt too simple and kind of cartoonish? Like, the movie shows that this is a charming city actually by making all the people get along and sing and dance in the streets… you know, literally like Whoville in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Meanwhile, “Belfast” suddenly switches to violence, which has all the energy of the this is fine meme. I see what they’re going for. But we needed more stuff in between to bridge the gap. It feels a little too cartoonish otherwise.
This is kind of the most Oscar-Baity film I’ve seen in a long time. There’s nothing wrong with that, just like… damn, just go for it I guess.
