Sì dolce non sonò chol lir’Orfeo
Quand’à se trasse fer’ucell’e boschi
D’amor cantando d’infante di deo,

Come loghallo mio di fuor da boschi
Con nota tale che gia ma’udita
Non fu da Filomena’n verdi boschi.

Ne più Febo cantò quando schernita
Da Marsia fu suo tibia’n folti boschi
Dove vincendo la spoglio di vita.

Di Teb’avanc’al dent’Anfione
E fecto fa contrario del Gorgone.

Orpheus’ lyre did not sound so sweetly
when singing with love, both god and child,
He drew to him beast, bird, and wood;


Nor did Phoebus resound more in song when
Marsyas scorned his flute amid thick woods,
where Phoebus triumphed and took his life;

So crows the cock from beyond the wood
in such tones as Philomela
in green groves never heard:

Like Amphion’s enclosing Thebes,
they counter Gorgon’s might.
