Kerlingarfjöll (1,477 m (4,846 ft)) is a mountain range in Iceland situated in the Highlands of Iceland near the Kjölur highland road. The volcanic origin of these mountains is evidenced by the numerous hot springs and rivulets in the area. And indeed, they are part of a large volcano system of 100km² (38.6 square mile). The volcanoes of the range are tuyas.
The earth is shimmering red in this area because of the volcanic rhyolite stone the mountains are composed of. Minerals that have emerged from the hot springs also color the ground yellow, red and green.
The name Kerlingarfjöll, which translates to “Old Lady Mountain,” comes from a folk tale. It is about an old, ugly female troll who wandered around the area until the daylight caught her and turned her into stone. More precisely, it is a 25-meter (82 feet) tuff tower which remains to decorate the valley today.
The first scientists visited the mountains in 1890. Later on, in the next century, the nearby Kjölur Road was constructed, connecting the north and the south of the country. This made it possible for the first vehicle to enter Ásgarður Valley in 1936, which is the site where the Kerlingarfjöll resort is located today.
In old times, Kerlingarfjöll was considered a rather unfriendly place. People thought that the region was full of trolls or outlaws. Due to both this and the harsh road conditions, Kerlingarfjöll was not explored for centuries

Kerlingarfjöll eru stórbrotinn og svipfagur fjallaklasi, um 150 km², suðvestan undir Hofsjökli. Draga þau nafn af drang einum miklum og dökkum, úr móbergi, um 25 m háum, sem Kerling heitir og stendur upp úr ljósri líparítskriðu sunnan í Tindi (Kerlingartindi) í vestanverðum fjöllunum.

Background:
Rafn is an Experienced Icelandic Landscape and Nature Documentary Photographer living just a few kilometers outside the Capital of Reykjavík. Where nature surrounds him and he only needs to walk a few minutes to some of the most beautiful places Iceland has to offer. His goal is to document the raw nature for the coming generation to show them what we have or are destroying. His fascination with Icelandic nature and geologic diversity is endless. Although he has been photographing Iceland for more than thirty years now, he finds the magic is still around the corner and he understands it will take more than a lifetime to finish the job.
He has published 8 books called “Wild Iceland – the untouched nature”. Each book focuses on the collection of the best of the sensational nature of the individual parts of Iceland; these eight books contain photographs of the south, southwest, west, and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, north, east, west fjord, and the highlands.
His photos have been displayed on front pages of various magazines, postcards . . . and been awarded on several occasions for his photography and documentation.
One thing he doesn´t like, is photo competitions and he never enters them, but that’s just him.
