GREECE: ANTI NATO PROTESTS

Protesters opposing NATO attacks on Yugoslavia targeted their anger at American diplomatic sites around Europe on Friday, in a sign of mounting public challenges to the military campaign.

In Greece, another NATO member, public outrage at the bombing appeared focused on the Americans.

Police increased security at the U-S and British embassies and various American sites in Athens before a large protest rally in Athens late on Friday.

15 thousand protesters attended the angry march to the U-S Embassy.

Police clashed with rioting youths who lit fires and smashed cars and store windows.

Crowds hurled eggs and rocks at the U-S and British embassies before they were eventually dispersed.

Several light injuries were reported.

Some demonstrators waved Greek and Yugoslav flags and carried religious icons, reflecting the Orthodox Christian faith shared by the two countries.

Greek officials have urged NATO to halt the bombing and resume negotiations.

Many Greeks also sympathise with their fellow Orthodox Serbs who rule Yugoslavia.
