Here we have The Mahabharata, translated by John D. Smith and published by Penguin Classics. This edition is abridged and was first published in 2009.

This paperback edition is printed on the regular Penguin Classics non-acid free paper, the text size is on the smaller side but the book opens up perfectly due to the softness of the paper and the large thickness of the book. The book is printed in the UK.

This book was my first introduction to the Mahabharata, and don’t let the abridgment scare you away from it. The unabridged Mahabharata is incredible long and as a first read through I can definitely recommend John D. Smith’s translation. But keep in mind that it’s still 833 pages long.

I love the Mahabharata, it’s an epic poem so filled with characters, stories, teachings, emotions . . . and all of it thought provoking. It’s in my view greater than even the Iliad and Odyssey and I hope to one day read this epic unabridged and study it thoroughly.
