Read through the clients birth plan again to refresh your memory of exactly what she is aiming for, make sure you are showered rested, well fed and calm before leaving home if possible. You usually do have plenty of warning with the pre-labour phase which can easily go for 24 hours before you are required.
Experienced Doulas and Midwives advise not rushing to the woman's side in the pre-labour phase as you can easily be too much of a distraction and slow or even stop this phase from progressing and then the woman may lose her rhythm or focus. The best person to be at her side at this time is usually her intimate partner and even they should be resting as much ass possible.
Normally when a woman's contractions are at least one minute in length and 2 to 3 minutes apart they'll call the hospital and go in to be examined, when the midwife tells the woman that her cervix is 4cms then the midwives normally say she's started the active labour phase or true labour or real labour and then its the right time for the Doula to make her way into the hospital to guide and support the woman and her partner.
Of course there's a million variations to this scenario, I'm just describing a standard textbook sort of description here. It may vary according to induction, or having twins or breech or second or subsequent baby.
