How I Keep 8 Tangs in a 210 Gallon Reef: Rules, Risks & Success Tips | Mile High Reefers
Host: Scott Anderson Featured Fish: Blue Tang, Purple Tang (x2), Yellow Tang, Powder Blue Tang, Kole Tang, Fowleri Tang, and Sailfin Tang.
Can you really keep eight different tangs in a single reef tank? Conventional wisdom says "one tang per genus," but in today’s video, I’m showing you how I broke the rules and successfully built a "Tang Empire" in my 210-gallon display.
This hasn't been an easy journey. From the "Great Yellow Tang Exile" to losing an expensive Chevron Tang to Marine Velvet, I’ve faced the trials and tribulations of high-stakes stocking. I’ll share the "Genus Rule," the importance of copper quarantine, and the specific "night-introduction" trick I used to integrate three aggressive Zebrasoma tangs at once.
⏱️ Key Topics & Timestamps
0:50 – The 90-Gallon Origins: Starting with Rinkins (Blue Tang) and Pinky (Yellow Tang).
1:45 – The Tang Rules: Understanding Genera and why similar-looking fish fight.
2:40 – The Quarantine Commandment: Why Tangs are "Ich Magnets" and how to protect your investment.
3:00 – Breaking the Rules: Introducing a Purple Tang to an established Yellow Tang.
3:35 – The Exile: Why I had to tear down my reef to remove an aggressive Yellow Tang.
4:30 – The Chevron Tragedy: A hard lesson on Marine Velvet and why early copper treatment matters.
5:45 – Diversifying Genuses: Adding the Fowleri, Yellow-Eye Kole, and Powder Blue Tangs.
7:05 – The Final Strategy: How to add multiple Zebrasoma tangs (Yellow, Purple, and Sailfin) at the same time.
8:30 – The Morning After: Dealing with "Extreme Violence" and the hierarchy of the reef.
🐟 The "Tang Genus" Cheat Sheet:
To minimize aggression, try to pick one representative from each of these common groups:
Zebrasoma: Yellow, Purple, Sailfin, Gem, and Scopas Tangs.
Acanthurus: Powder Blue, Achilles, Clown, and Convict Tangs.
Ctenochaetus (Bristletooth): Kole, Chevron, and Tomini Tangs.
Paracanthurus: The Hippo/Blue Tang.
Naso: Blonde Naso and Unicorn Tangs.
💡 Scott’s Tips for a Multi-Tang Tank:
Quarantine with Copper: Tangs are highly susceptible to Ich and Velvet. Treating them in a separate QT tank is the only way to ensure your display stays parasite-free.
Add in "Batches": If you want multiple fish from the same genus (like two Purple Tangs), add them at the exact same time to spread out the aggression.
Night Introduction: Drop new tangs into the tank after the lights are completely off. This gives them time to find a hiding spot before the "boss" of the tank wakes up.
Feed Heavily: Aggression is often linked to food competition. Keeping your tangs fat with plenty of Nori will keep the peace.
