Durch die Hin- und Herbewegung des Kolbens in dem Zylinderraum wird durch den Kolben zugleich Arbeit geleistet.

Faszinierend an der Konzeption ist die Einfachheit, da der Motor nur aus wenigen Teilen besteht, von denen sich überdies nur ein einziges bewegt.

A West German inventor has developed an internal combustion engine with one moving part that, he says, consumes about 30 percent less gasoline than conventional motors and can be made for a fraction of the cost.
The final verdict is pending, but engineers and industry analysts are unsure whether the inventor, Frank Stelzer, has built the mouse trap to make the world beat a path to his door, or has reinvented the wheel.

Automotive engineers call it a free-piston engine, and say the concept has been around since the 1920s. But many acknowledge that Mr. Stelzer - a philosophizing blend of Marshall McLuhan and Gyro Gearloose - has produced an immensely refined version that stands a good chance of revolutionizing the manufacture of pumps, compressors and hydraulic systems, and may even propel the car of the future.

Prototypes Being Made
''We're living in the pneumatic age, mechanical solutions are no longer acceptable,'' Mr. Stelzer said, wielding a wrench at a recent demonstration outside the cream-colored garage where he and a helper are making prototypes for interested companies around the world.
