Adriatic amphorae, also known as Adriatic-type amphorae, were ceramic vessels produced and used around the Adriatic Sea during the Roman period. These vessels were essential for the transportation and storage of goods such as wine, olive oil, fish sauce, and other commodities.
Adriatic amphorae typically exhibit specific characteristics that distinguish them from other types of amphorae. They often have a pointed or rounded base, a tall and slender body, and two handles for lifting and pouring. These features were designed to optimize space on ships and facilitate handling during loading and unloading.
Archaeological evidence suggests that Adriatic amphorae were manufactured in various production centers along the Adriatic coast, including regions of modern-day Italy, Croatia, and Albania. Different workshops and kilns employed distinctive styles and techniques, resulting in a wide diversity of shapes, sizes, and decorative elements among the amphorae.
