It's winter 1985, and somewhere in a Manchester recording studio, Johnny Marr is trying to explain to his label boss why The Smiths need to record a song called "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" that is very obviously about said label boss being a terrible boss. Geoff Travis, who runs Rough Trade Records and has just realized the "bloody awful poetry" line is about a poem he wrote for Morrissey, listens and probably wonders if indie rock was a mistake.
This is not a story about how a great album gets made. This is a story about how a perfect album gets made despite: label disputes that delay release by seven months, a bassist's heroin addiction, a rhythm section realizing they're basically hired help, a guitarist on the verge of collapse, and a frontman who's decided the best way to handle workplace frustration is to write savage character assassinations disguised as jangle pop.
