This is a set of seven variations on the La Folia theme, written by Michel Farinel (1649-1726) and published in John Playford's Division Violin in 1685. Free sheet music is at the Mutopia Project website (http://www.mutopiaproject.org/cgibin/....
Farinel was a French Baroque composer and violinist, and this is his best-known piece. The basic theme, known as "La Folia", or "La Follia" or "Folies d'Espagne" is one of the most prominent themes in renaissance and baroque music and over 150 composers of the 16th to 18th centuries wrote sets of variations for it. Farinel's variations are among of the more prominent examples of the so-called "Later Folia" during the baroque era, along with those by Jean Baptiste Lully, Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, Alessandro Scarlatti and Johann Sebastian Bach.
The piece was written for solo violin, with a repeating 16-bar basso continuo figure (the "Ground"), which is not in my recording. Played on my Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin.
