Kolkata; also known as Calcutta (the official name until 2001) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the city is approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) west of the border with Bangladesh. It is the primary business, commercial, and financial hub of Eastern India and the main port of communication for North-East India,as well as having the third-largest urban economy of India.Kolkata is home to 9,600 millionaires and 4 billionaires with a total wealth of $290 billion.
According to the 2011 Indian census, Kolkata is the seventh-most populous city in India, with a population of 4.5 million residents within the city limits, and a population of over 14.1 million residents in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. The Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port and its sole major riverine port. Kolkata is known as the "cultural capital of India" for the city's historical and architectural significance.

Character Of The City

Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European capital—yet now set in one of the poorest and most overpopulated regions of India—Kolkata has grown into a city of sharp contrasts and contradictions. Kolkata has had to assimilate strong European influences and overcome the limitations of its colonial legacy in order to find its own unique identity. In the process it created an amalgam of East and West that found its expression in the life and works of the 19th-century Bengali elite and its most noteworthy figure, the poet and mystic Rabindranath Tagore.

নামকরণ-



১৭শ শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে সুতানুটি, ডিহি কলিকাতা ও গোবিন্দপুর নামে তিনটি গ্রাম নিয়ে কলকাতা শহরটি গড়ে ওঠে। এর মধ্যে ডিহি কলিকাতা নামটি থেকে কলকাতা নামটির উৎপত্তি।

"কলিকাতা" বা "কলকাতা" নামটির উৎপত্তি সম্পর্কে গবেষকদের মধ্যে মতান্তর রয়েছে:

একটি মতে, "কালীক্ষেত্র" (হিন্দু দেবী কালীর ক্ষেত্র) নামটি থেকে "কলিকাতা" বা "কলকাতা" নামটির উৎপত্তি।

মতান্তরে, বাংলা "কিলকিলা" (অর্থাৎ,"চ্যাপ্টা এলাকা") কথাটি থেকে "কলিকাতা" নামটির উৎপত্তি হয়।

অন্য এক মতে বাংলা খাল ও কাটা শব্দ দু’টির বিকৃতির ফলে কলকাতা নামটির উৎপত্তি ঘটে।

অপর মতে, এই অঞ্চলটি কলিচুন ও কাতা (নারকেল ছোবড়ার আঁশ) উৎপাদনের জন্য বিশেষভাবে পরিচিত ছিল। সেই থেকেই কলিকাতা নামটির উৎপত্তি ঘটে।

বাংলায় কলিকাতা বা কলকাতা নামটি প্রচলিত হলেও ইংরেজি ভাষায় এই শহর আগে ক্যালকাটা (ইংরেজি: Calcutta) নামে পরিচিত ছিল। ২০০১ সালে নামের বাংলা উচ্চারণের সঙ্গে সমতা রেখে ইংরেজিতেও শহরের নাম কলকাতা (ইংরেজি: Kolkata) রাখা হয়।
