Those of us who eat meat, we are pretty attached to it. For most meat-eaters, meat is the main attraction on the dinner plate! However, reducing your meat in-take is not only better for your health, it’s also better for the environment (and definitely better for the animals!). So, regardless of your ethical or cultural stance on the subject, all of us should at least strive to reduce our meat consumption. And the meat that we do consume should be the best quality, most nutritious and raised in the most humane way.
THAT’S WHERE DECFERRING FOOD LABLES ARE KEY!
Food labels are not only confusing, they are often misleading.
Here is a recap of the labels explained in this video…
Antibiotic- Free (“no antibiotics administered” or ‘raised without antibiotics”)
This means that no antibiotics were given over the animal’s lifetime.
No Hormones Added (or ‘no hormones administered”)
This label refers to animals raised without added growth hormones.
Grain-fed:
Animals raised on a grain diet.
Why? Grains fatten up cows fast.
Be sure to check label to make sure it says 100% vegetarian diet to make sure the animals were not given feed containing animal by-products.
Cows digestive system is not designed to digest corn.
Genetic blueprint says they are designed to eat grass.
They get sick and diseased on grains. = antibiotics.
Just like mass agricultural farming has made humans fat on grains, it’s doing the same thing for cows!
Grass-fed:
Animals were fed grass (their natural diet), rather than grains.
More humane, leaner, lower in fat and calories.
No synthetic hormones that promote growth.
No antibiotics to prevent disease.
Only antibiotics to TREAT disease.
Grass-fed label doesn’t mean they ate only grass their whole life. Some are grass-fed & grain finished, which means they ate grain from a feedlot prior to slaughter.
Look for grass-fed & grass-finished for the healthiest most humane options.
Pasture-raised:
This refers to eggs, poultry or meat raised outdoors.
Animals were raised on a pasture where cows could eat grass and other nutritious plants and chickens could foliage for food such as small insects, seeds and worms.
Pasturing meat and poultry is a traditional farming technique that allows animals to bee raised in a humane manner.
This is similar to grass-fed, but it more clearly indicates that the animal was raised outdoors on a pasture.
Free-range (or free-roaming):
This label, defined by USDA for eggs and poultry, allows animals access to the outdoors so they can engage in natural behaviors.
It does NOT mean cruelty free or antibiotic free, or that the animals even spent the majority of the time outdoors.
Often times farmers keep the feed indoors, so the chickens spend most of their time indoors.
And, “outdoors” can just be a small pen outside that consists of a mound of dirt.
Cage-free:
Birds were raised without cages. What this does NOT explain is if these animals were raised outdoors on pastures or indoors in overcrowded conditions.
These are usually horrible conditions where birds are raised in large over-crowded warehouses.
The animals are most likely on growth hormones and antibiotics to prevent illnesses.
Organic:
This label is the most strict in terms of certification.
Animals are mandated outdoor access and pasture for livestock
They are never given antibiotics or synthetic hormones.
They are only fed 100% organic feed.
Very strict records are kept of all of the animals.
Natural:
There are no standards that exist when used on meat or poultry
Humanely-raised:
This refers to meats and poultry produced where the animals are treated kindly, given comfortable living conditions, and are able to engage in natural behaviors.
“Certified Humane” this still allows practices like beak trimming of chickens, but it is much better than the factory farms and feedlots of commercial farming.
GMO-free, Non-GMO, or no GMOs: (Genetically Modified Organisms):
GMOs are plants or animals that are genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants or animals.
So if a product is non-GMO, it is in it’s original DNA state.
***Educating yourself on Food Labels so that you know where your food comes from and how it is produced, that’s a really good way to live young.
