Porto Portugal: Barefoot in the Atlantic to the Douro Valley

Описание: We began our time in Porto, Portugal barefoot in the Atlantic, collecting small treasures and taking a moment to ground on the other side of the ocean from home. From there we explored the city on foot — blue-tiled churches, quiet streets, and views of the Douro River from above the iconic Ponte Luís I bridge.

During our year-long adult gap year, this is how we try to experience each place: several intentional days, long walks, and time to notice the details that make a city feel personal. Porto even gave us unexpected reminders of Nathan’s hometown, a small connection between Massachusetts and northern Portugal that we didn’t plan but won’t forget.

We set aside one full day for a Douro Valley day trip from Porto, with vineyard views, traditional port wine tastings, and a peaceful boat ride along the river. It was one of the most joyful and memorable days of our time in Portugal.

This journey is part of our combined sabbatical and micro-retirement, where we’re traveling full-time through Europe and beyond while tracking our spending, sharing real budgets, and learning what intentional travel looks like for us.

Porto was walkable, layered with history, and exactly our pace — a place that felt both familiar and entirely its own.
