The Jewar Airport near Noida is set to be renamed Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, following approval from the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet. But beyond the name change, there are bigger questions about the state’s aviation infrastructure.
In February 2026, an RTI-based report by Aaj Tak revealed that six out of seven airports in Uttar Pradesh that had started commercial flight services after 2021 had suspended regular flights. These included Kushinagar, Azamgarh, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Shravasti and Moradabad. At the time of the report, Ayodhya was the only one of these seven airports operating regular scheduled flights.
Kushinagar International Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20, 2021. Regular flights began in November 2021, but services on the Kushinagar–Delhi route were suspended in November 2023.
In this ground report, we look at the Jewar Airport name change, the cost involved in renaming an airport, and the questions surrounding operational flights at other airports in Uttar Pradesh. What does it take to make an airport successful beyond its inauguration, infrastructure and name?
