I have intentionally avoided talking about eyes on this show — despite being an optometrist — because I never wanted the conversation to narrow into prescription updates or eye care tips. But vision is far bigger than refractive error.
Vision determines autonomy. It shapes how safely you drive, how confidently you move, and how independently you age. At the same time, the eye is one of the only places in the body where living neural tissue and blood vessels can be directly observed without invasive procedures.
In this episode, I explain why 20/20 is not the same as visual health, how color vision and contrast sensitivity can change before clarity does, how systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia leave ocular indicators long before symptoms appear, and why routine eye examinations function as both performance evaluation and systemic surveillance.
This episode includes a clinical story that reframes what an eye exam can reveal — and why protecting vision is not cosmetic, but infrastructural.
Uncommonly Remarkable is a health and wellness show focused on understanding how the body works and how everyday choices shape long-term health.
I’m Artis Beatty, a doctor of optometry and Chief Medical Officer at MyEyeDr. While my professional background informs how I think, the perspectives shared here are my own.
