Indian markets are navigating through a phase of heightened uncertainty as Donald Trump’s swearing-in on January 20 approaches, bringing concerns of market volatility and policy unpredictability to the forefront. Trump's previous term as president was marked by frequent, market-moving statements on social media, creating an environment of instability that investors fear might return. Markets are particularly cautious about the potential for tariff impositions on various countries, as hinted by Trump’s rhetoric. While these policies could significantly affect nations like China, India is expected to experience a relatively muted impact. However, sectors reliant on exports might face challenges, especially given the ongoing rupee depreciation and the dollar’s appreciation.
Avinash Gorakshakar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities, points out that while India may be less vulnerable compared to China, concerns remain around tariffs targeting specific exports. The weakening rupee, combined with an already fragile economic situation, exacerbates these concerns. Indian markets will be closely watching Trump’s stance on critical issues such as trade policies, global relations, and his approach to key economies, including India, to gauge the potential impact on various sectors.
Another pressing issue is the continued outflow of Foreign Institutional Investments (FIIs) from Indian markets. With US bond yields still hovering around 4.6%, foreign investors find the bond market more attractive than equities in emerging markets. Avinash Gorakshakar highlights that until bond yields in the US drop below 4%, a significant reversal in FII flows into India is unlikely. The weakening rupee also poses challenges, as it dissuades fresh dollar inflows and affects investor confidence. Moreover, many FIIs have already booked profits and gained from currency fluctuations, reducing their immediate incentive to return to Indian equities.
Despite these challenges, there are signs of hope on the horizon. US inflation has started to cool, and bond yields are beginning to decline, signalling the possibility of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the coming months. Avinash Gorakshakar anticipates that by April or May, if the Fed implements a meaningful rate cut and stabilises the dollar, FIIs might look to re-enter emerging markets like India. Until then, the Indian markets will have to navigate this phase of outflows and volatility with caution.
As for the broader market sentiment, the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s policies could continue to drive short-term volatility. However, India's relative resilience, supported by its diversified trade structure and strategic positioning in global markets, offers some stability. The upcoming months will be critical for assessing how Trump’s policies and global economic trends shape the investment landscape.
In the meantime, experts suggest a cautious approach to investing. Identifying resilient sectors and adopting prudent strategies will be key for investors navigating this period of uncertainty. As market dynamics evolve, opportunities are likely to emerge for those prepared to align their portfolios with long-term growth prospects.
