And so after twenty months of adventures, the story of Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, Alfred Jingle, and all the Pickwickians comes to an end in a double issue (for two shillings). Characters move to the West Indies, get married, come into inheritances, and some just retire. We’ll talk about how the story finally wraps up and also the experience of reading it over such a long period of time, just like the first readers of Boz.

The final issue of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was published at the end of October 1837 in a double issue (Nos. 19 and 20) containing the final five chapters of the story and also extra textual material (a title page, table of contents, instructions for the binder, etc.) for readers who wanted to take all of their serial parts and have them bound into one volume.

Note on the chapter numbers
When the serial was first published, Chapter 28 (“A Good-Humoured Christmas Chapter . . .”) was followed by Chapter 28 (“The Story of the Goblins . . .”). The chapter was just divided into two, but both given the same number. The Table of Contents for the first edition just put a little asterisk next to the Goblins chapter number. The Penguin Classics (2003) lists the two chapters as Ch 28 and Ch 28(ii). However most editions adjust the chapter numbers and the Goblin chapter becomes Ch 29 and so on until the end. This means after Ch 28, the chapter numbers in the original serial are all one behind the chapter numbers in most editions. When in doubt, check the chapter titles.
