We make our way back to the Midwest to see one of the most underrated 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotives in operation.
Milwaukee Road #261 was built in 1944 by the American Locomotive Company as an S3 class 4-8-4 locomotive for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (better known as the Milwaukee Road). She would haul both passenger and heavy freight trains for the railroad until she was retired in 1956. Two years later she would be placed on display at the (at the time new) National Railway Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin. She was restored in 1993 and was set to work hauling many excursions. Including trips on the Wisconsin Central, Twin Cities & Western, Steamtown's grand opening, and the famous New River Gorge excursion. In 1996 she would receive an LFM 6 chime which she still carries to this day (this was the whistle we heard throughout our trip, while the 3 chime was used we unfortunately missed it). She would continue to haul many excursions throughout the 1990's and the 2000's and gained itself the recognition for being the second steam locomotive to be Amtrak certified. She was overhauled in 2013 and has remained in excursion service ever since. As soon as we heard that the 261 would be hauling the harvest excursions in October, we jumped on the opportunity.
