https://www.myboxingcoach.com - This is a short video, short because I have not much to say really.
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor is one of the most talked about sporting events of 2017.
Both guys are at the top of their respective sports.
Mayweather Jr done it all in the sport of boxing whilst Conor McGregor has done much to bring MMA front and centre in the sporting world.
Both guys are loudmouthed, both are outspoken and both seem to relish the limelight.
Why has the fight been made? After lots of mud-slinging both ways, ultimately money talks!
The question for me is does Conor McGregor have a realistic chance of upsetting the odds and beating Floyd Mayweather Jr?
A little boxing background on Conor McGregor.
He boxed as a novice amateur in Ireland before switching to MMA.
This means that he was well schooled, be under no illusion of that.
The boxing clubs in Ireland are as good as you’ll find anywhere.
The amateur boxing development system is outstanding and the quality of coaching is impeccable.
The key thing for me though is that for the last 10 or 12 years, Conor McGregor has been training to fight in the MMA octagon.
For best part of 30 years Mayweather has done the same but specifically for the boxing ring, beginning as a phenomenon in the US Boxing system and following that up in the pro ranks.
Add to this the fact that Mayweather has fought some of the best fighters of his generation – that’s a serious amount of experience and skill.
Conor McGregor is expecting himself to re-engineer his whole fighting style in 10 weeks to face one of the finest technicians the ring has ever seen.
Some things that I expect:
• I expect Mayweather to be cruel, to look to hurt and humiliate McGregor for as long as the bout lasts.
• Mayweather may be 40, but he’s always looked after himself so to me he has the athletic capability of a man 5 to 10 years younger.
• When a person is taking a beating, they revert to form – they revert to what they know best. I wonder whether a disqualification against McGregor is a real possibility. Less likely (but still a possibility) is an injury with McGregor using some tactics inside to damage Mayweather?
• The most likely outcome though is that McGregor simply ‘shuts down’, devoid of ideas and ships too much punishment for any referee to stand by and accept.
• On a final note, and this might be controversial, but I think that any of the top 10 welters in the World would beat McGregor in the boxing ring.
As always, interested in your thoughts.
Cheers
Fran
