For the third time since Nigeria's independence in 1960, the military overthrew the administration in power. This brought to an end the country's longest-serving government.
Unlike those before it, the toppling of the Yakubu Gowon-led military administration was a bloodless coup.
The government was toppled while the head of state was away at the Organization of African Unity (OAU) summit in Kampala, Uganda.
