Opened in 1801, the Crinan Canal is nine miles long (14 km) connecting Loch Gilp at Ardrishaig with The Sound of Jura at Crinan. The canal was designed to save boats having to navigate around the Kintyre Peninsula.
The Crinan Canal has 15 locks, six swing bridges and one retractable bridge with around 2,000 watercraft using the canal each year and the towpath forming part of National Cycle Route 78.
