Rural crime is down, but we must not get complacent.
The latest NFU Mutual Rural Crime Report shows a 16.5% drop in rural crime costs, falling to £44.1 million in 2024. GPS theft is down 71%, and quad and ATV thefts have fallen by 16%. These results reflect what is possible when we work together, not just through policing, but by uniting insurers, landowners, local leaders, and law enforcement.
At this week’s NFU parliament event, leaders from across the country came together to highlight the power of partnerships. From the NFU Mutual, NFU, CLA and Countryside Alliance, to the Rural Services Network and Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, collaboration was at the heart of every success story shared.
There were strong contributions from Superintendent Andy Huddleston, where he credited the recent success of close partnership work, not only within policing but also with NFU Mutual, insurers, and other stakeholders. Katy Bourne, PCC for Sussex, reported a 25% drop in rural crime in her area, while David Allen, PCC for Cumbria, highlighted a new manifesto to push progress even further. Rachel Hallos of the NFU praised the active involvement of MPs and PCCs working directly with police forces. NRCN Chair Tim Passmore reinforced the need for rural crime to be recognised at the highest levels, including by DEFRA, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice.
This is just the beginning. Let’s keep the pressure on those targeting rural areas and continue to prove that rural crime matters.
