Chilblains Home Remedies
In this video, we will be telling you the most effective chilblains home remedies to use.
Chilblains are small lesions caused by the inflammation of small blood vessels after exposure to cold air.
They are painful and tend to affect the skin on your hands, nose and feet.
The infection appears as brown or red patches of skin.
So what are the remedies for chilblains?
Severe ulcerating or recurring chilblains need professional attention.
A good podiatrist can treat chilblains and offer prevention advice.
Still, your doctor may provide preventative medicine, if you suffer from severe chilblains.
But, similar to diabetes, you must see your doctor to check the circulation in the affected area if you have a recurring condition.
Chilblains generally develop several hours after exposure to the cold.
Symptoms include a burning and itching sensation in the affected areas, which can come more painful if you go into a warm room.
The affected skin may also swell and turn red or dark blue.
In severe cases, the face of the skin may break, and papules or pustules can develop.
It is important not to scratch the skin as it can easily become infected.
Because there is no cure for chilblains, it is best to avoid getting them in the first place.
The good news is that chilblains, in most cases, do not require medical treatment because they are not serious.
They generally heal on their own, unless you have scratched them to the point of infection.
The most important thing you can do is refrain from scratching or rubbing the affected area.
Although it may be tempting, scratching or rubbing these areas could cause the sensitive skin to break.
You would increase the risk of infection if the skin breaks or you continue to scratch with your nails, or walk barefoot.
The key to treatment is to get warm blood flowing to the fingers and toes in the following ways:
It is critical to keep the entire body warm, so wearing gloves and socks can help keep your fingers and toes warm.
Keep the rest of the body warm outside with jackets, scarves, and headdresses, and wear protective attire when going out.
Chilblains can recur with minor exposure to cold, so ensure to keep an eye on the temperature.
Also, cigarette smoking exacerbates chilblains.
In the most severe cases, drugs can be used to increase blood flow to the fingers and toes.
Take pain relievers such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Advil (ibuprofen).
Itching and lumps are treated with topical steroids.
Topical cortisone cream may be necessary for relieving pain and reducing swelling.
To relieve redness, your doctor may prescribe heparin ointment.
You may also be put on a dosage of an antibiotic if the podiatrist suspects an infection.
The best known natural remedy for chilblains is calendula, a flower with important healing properties.
The advantage of this remedy is that you can prepare an ointment based on calendula at home: leave 10 grams of flowers to macerate for five days in a glass jar containing 50 grams of olive oil; keep it exposed to the sun, and remember to shake it from time to time to mix the contents.
When the ointment is ready, you can apply it several times a day, to the at-risk or already reddened area.
Chilblains can also be treated with aloe vera gel, which has both anti-inflammatory and anti-seditious agents, so it can help with pain and inflammation.
.
To treat swelling and redness of chilblains, add salt to hot water and soak your feet in it.
The water should be mildly hot.
People with diabetes and other neuropathic illnesses should avoid this remedy because they have a poor judgment of temperature due to neuropathy.
Repeat this process several times a day, to fully heal chilblains.
Last but not least as a natural remedy against chilblains, sage leaves.
They have anti-inflammatory properties, prevent infections and are perfect for skin contact.
In fact, in case of chilblains you can always prepare sage infusion at home.
Boil a pot of water with a handful of sage leaves and transfer the infusion to a bowl.
As soon as it is warm, soak the reddened parts in it and leave them to soak until the water is cold.
