Manasi Prasad (born 28 May 1981) is a prominent member of the new generation of Carnatic musicians from Bengaluru, India, known for her blend of classical mastery, innovation, and global outreach. She was initially trained by her mother, Tara Prasad, and later studied under gurus such as Jahnavi Jayaprakash, Dr. Varadarangan, R.K. Padmanabha, and Dr. Sriram Parasuram. She gave her first concert at the age of nine and has since performed widely across India and on six continents. Recognized for her intellectual approach to music and her skill in complex forms like Avadhana Pallavi, she has received numerous honors, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, the Shanmukhananda Yuva Kalakar Puraskar, and the Rotary-Brigade Young Achievers Award. Alongside her musical accomplishments, Manasi holds an engineering degree and an MBA from IIM Bangalore, where she was an Aditya Birla Scholar, and has been named a TED Fellow, Melton Fellow, and one of India Today’s “35 Indians of Tomorrow.” She is also known for her leadership role as the Museum Director of the Indian Music Experience (IME) Museum, India’s first interactive music museum, where she contributed significantly to music education and cultural preservation. Balancing tradition with creativity, Manasi continues to collaborate across artistic disciplines while serving as a prominent ambassador of Carnatic music worldwide.

This Krithi is Daravu ( a particular type of musical form (Sabha ganam), which relates a historical or puranic incident or ancient story, expressing love or the greatness of a generous person. It is often in madhyama kalam, with pallavi, anupallavi (not always), and more than on Charanam, with a mixture of jatis. It is often used in dance dramas as an introduction ). It is the introductory lyric of Thyagaraja's Dance Drama "Prahlada Bhaktha Vijayam"

In this keerthanam Thyagaraja Swamy describes the part played by the dwarika (gatekeeper) who appears on the stage before a dance drama is enacted. He sings the praise of God before requesting the stage manager to tell about the drama.

Meaning:

O people, behold this gatekeeper who is coming forward chanting the name ‘Vasudeva’.

Behold this gatekeeper who proceeds chanting “Vasudeva,” holding in his heart the lotus-eyed Lord, worshipped by Indra and the other celestial beings.

Behold this gatekeeper who, clad in an ochre dhoti and adorned with the auspicious red Sri-churnam upon his forehead, moves repeatedly around the assembly, ever holding a golden staff in his hand. As he performs his duty with dignity and devotion, he proceeds chanting the sacred name “Vasudeva.”

Behold this gatekeeper who, every now and then, strokes his moustache with pride, imagining himself to be like Manmatha (Cupid). He hops and jumps playfully, speaks boastfully about himself, and laughs heartily all the while proceeding and chanting the sacred name “Vasudeva.”

Behold this gatekeeper who dances most gracefully and with overflowing enthusiasm, devoutly offering his own heartfelt prayers to Lord Hari, the compassionate purifier and redeemer of the fallen. He renders his songs in perfect raga, tala, and rhythmic gait, harmoniously blending melody and rhythm, while glorifying that Supreme Lord who is also extolled by Thyagaraja. All the while, as he moves forward in service, he continues to chant reverently and without interruption the sacred and powerful name “Vasudeva.”
