Before the USFL's third and final season in 1985, an antitrust 1.32 billion dollar lawsuit was filed by the league against the NFL. The suit alleged the older league was conspiring to put the newer one out of business. It also accused the NFL of unfair monopoly with TV Networks, player contracts and more.
USFL Attorney Roy Cohn led the lawsuit along with NJ Generals Owner Donald Trump in what many critics called a "desperate" attempt for the young league to extort money out of the NFL.
Even Pittsburgh Maulers owner Edward Debartolo Sr. sued his own son, Edward Jr. who was owner of the San Francisco 49er's at the time.
In the end of course the National Football League although found guilty of monopoly, was only obligated to pay $1 in damages (tripled three times: $3), but did pay over $6 million in attorney fees which most people don't know about.
