Our violinist Alice Earll introduces her baroque violin.
Alice is playing on a violin from 1842, made in London by Thomas Kennedy which has been set up in the style of a baroque instrument. This violin is kindly on loan from the Harrison Frank Family Foundation. The baroque style bow Alice is using is a modern replica of an Italianate style found in the high baroque, made by Timothy Richards. The photo comparisons are of a violin by Benois Fleury from 1759, which is a more authentic and clearer example of the baroque style of violin making and the modern violin by Harris and Sheldon from 2000. The modern style bow is by James Tubbs, made in the Tourte style from the late 19th Century.
