In this episode we are on a wildlife rescue operation with Sumatran conservation organisation SUMECO, to save an endangered Slow Loris, one of the cutest animals in the world (according to the internet!) and also one of the world's only venomous mammals. Slow Loris' are often taken from the wild for the illegal pet trade as well as for traditional medicines & rituals. The Slow Loris population is now declining and it is important to protect every individual and return them to the wild if possible.
The Slow Loris is (like us humans) a primate. They are nocturnal and live in the high canopies of secondary and primary forest, where they like to feed on fruit as well as saps. They can eat invertebrates too. The Slow Loris has a unique defence mechanism where they secrete a toxin from a gland on their elbow, they lick that toxin, which gives them a toxic bite. This is fatal to many animals, and dangerous to people - making them not good pets!
ABOUT SUMECO: it is an organisation set up by Bobi Handoko, a conservationist. SUMECO are based on the outskirts of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a sanctuary for wildlife, including the Orangutan, Sumatran Rhino, Elephant, Gibbon, Sun Bear, Pangolin, Slow Loris and other iconic mammal species

The Science:
With over 1 Million species on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, animal populations are in decline the world over. This is due to many reasons but what we know for sure is to keep the planet's amazing diversity of wildlife we need to learn as much as possible about where and how these creatures live their lives. Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.
