In the early hours of May 13, 1862, a 22-year-old enslaved man named Robert Smalls did the impossible.
While his white overseers slept, he and his crew quietly stole a heavily armed Confederate ship — the C.S.S. Planter — and navigated through enemy waters under the guns of Fort Sumter itself.
With the captain’s hat on his head and freedom in his heart, Smalls used wit, courage, and flawless knowledge of Charleston Harbor to deliver 17 enslaved souls — men, women, and children — from bondage to liberty.
But his story didn’t end there. Smalls went on to become a Union war hero, ship captain, and U.S. Congressman, proving that brilliance and bravery can rise from the darkest depths of oppression.
This is not just Black history — it’s American history.
🔥 From enslavement to legacy, this is the story they tried to erase.
