India’s caste system divided society into groups defined from birth, determining occupation, status, and spirituality. According to the Vedic hymn Purusha Sukta, the castes arose from the body of the cosmic giant Purusha: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (laborers). Outside them were the Dalits, the “untouchables.” Justified by the concept of dharma, the system upheld inequalities for centuries. Reformers such as Ambedkar and Gandhi fought against this structure and, although abolished by law, its marks still echo in modern India.
