I’ve been meaning to read Jeanette McCurdy’s memoir I’m Glad My Mother Died, so when I saw she had a new book, I thought… why not? Half His Age isn’t usually the type of story I gravitate toward, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about!
In this spoiler-light book review, I talk about Half His Age by Jeanette McCurdy, a raw and unflinching novel about Waldo, a 17-year-old girl living with her man-crazy, emotionally inattentive mother. She has a shopping addiction, a deep sense of emptiness, and—more than anything—wants her married-with-a-kid creative writing teacher. Bad.
The story follows their intense, messy affair and longing for each other… but once they actually get together, it’s no longer fun. The book dives into heavy, thought-provoking themes like emotionally absent motherhood, the impact of consumerism, unfulfillment in life and marriage, power imbalances in relationships, and the long-term effects of neglect AND SO MUCH MORE!
I was originally going to give this book 3 stars, but the ending completely surprised me (which rarely happens) so I bumped it up to 4 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you enjoy emotionally complex stories, controversial book club reads, and a little bit of smut, this one is definitely worth talking about.
