This Black History Month, we are starting where power actually begins with definition

In this opening episode of Pan Africanism in Practice, we explore how Black history is not only about events and movements but about how humanity itself has been defined and denied. W.E.B. Du Bois exposed the global color line that shaped Black life across the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean. Sylvia Wynter goes even further by showing how modern systems were built around a narrow definition of humanity that excluded Black people and justified inequality across education, healthcare, and the environment.

This video connects Black intellectual history to the present by showing how past ideas still shape today’s outcomes. It ties directly into the Eight Pillars of Sovereignty by explaining why educational sovereignty, healthcare sovereignty, and environmental sovereignty cannot exist without first reclaiming how Black people are defined and understood.
