In late August 2024, Sue, Cassie and I began a month-long trip leaving Ohio and traveling to the northeast with many stops including
The Adirondacks where we visited Lake Placid, New York.
Lake Champlain in Vermont
The White Mountains National Forest in New Hampshire
Acadia National Park in Maine, which was the pinnacle of our trip
The Green Mountains National Forest in Vermont
And, finally, a stop in the Finger Lakes region in New York
We are chronicling our trip to the northeast in a series of videos. This video (Episode 2) provides the highlights of our stop in the White Mountain National Forest where we stayed at Dry River Campground in the Crawford Notch State Park, New Hampshire. Crawford Notch State Park is in the center of Crawford Notch, a major pass through the White Mountains. The State Park is well known for its awe-inspiring views, majestic mountains, unspoiled wilderness, and miles of hiking trails. The park includes the Willey House historical site which is associated with the tragedy of August 28, 1826 when a flash flood occurred and all seven members of the Willey family perished. Sue and I visited the Willie House Historic Site on one of the afternoons, and then when we returned Cassie and I took a short hike from our campground in search of the Dry River.
Sue, Cassie, and I visited Diana’s Baths in Bartlett, NH, enjoying a short hike to the historic cascading pools once used for a sawmill. Later that day, Sue and I rode the Mount Washington Cog Railway, taking in spectacular views as the vintage train climbed to the 6,288-foot summit. There, we explored the summit's observatory, museum, and learned about its extreme weather history.
We also drove the scenic Kancamagus Highway, making stops at beautiful spots like the Lower Falls, Rocky Gorge, Falls Pond, the Russell-Colbath House, and the C.L. Graham Wangan Grounds overlook. One of the highlights was hiking the Sabbaday Brook Trail to Sabbaday Falls, a peaceful and picturesque spot that capped off our experience of the natural and historical wonders of the White Mountains.
